Time Travel

The Albion granary had stood for over 100 years and had become home to Browns Engineering, when in 1981 the building was demolished to make way for a new supermarket. Only the clock tower was preserved to leave a tenuous link to the past.

Back in 1986 Epping Forest Then and Now
was published. I remember at the time everyone seemed absolutely fascinated by this beautiful and informative book.

Recently I started thinking about the way that the book showed comparison images of the same place, one taken from the dawn of photography and the other from the 1980s. I decided that it would be an interesting project to take these existing images and add a third from the 21st century.

This is a personal project by Chris Shepherd, part of the Images of Essex team.

The old photographs that appear in this website are reproduced from Epping Forest Then and Now by Winston Ramsey and Reginald Fowkes, first published by Battle of Britain International Ltd in 1986. The book is still available from the publishers - see www.afterthebattle.com
